- Internationally acclaimed designer Thebe Magugu has launched the first full men’s collection it carries.
The Ipopeng-born star flew to Florence, Italy, to debut her collection at the Pitti Uomo. This fashion show usually occurs between the London and Milan menswear shows and, more recently, before the Paris fashions.
Inspired by Mandy Wiener’s book Whistleblower, Thebe Magugu Spring/Summer 2022 collection titled DoubleThink examines corruption and the informants that cause it.
“In many ways, the public problems we face stem from the dangerous actions of their leaders. For example, in South Africa, we have organized daily stories about the millions of missing people and families who control the economy,” he said.

He said he had chosen to highlight the plight of whistleblowers in South Africa to advocate for legislation, organizational support, and changes in social attitudes. He explains the name behind the collection.
“The collection is called ‘Doublethink,’ a term coined in George Orwell’s main novel from 1984 and defined as the act of accepting two conflicting beliefs at the same time. Corrupt politicians know the truth when they tell carefully crafted lies – the art of knowing and not knowing. “
The only 27-year-old designer from Joburg has accomplished so much in her career, including being included in the Forbes 30 to 30 rankings for 2019, winning the 2019 Emerging Designer Of the Year at the Black Fashion Awards, and working with major brands such as Johnnie Walker, Coca -Cola, and Volvo.
Magugu continues to innovate in the fashion industry. As one of Woolmark’s top six finalists, the 2019 LVMH award winner has developed an antivirus thread coating that kills 99% of all viruses that land on its surface.
